In 2013, China steel industry suffered huge loss, which triggered strong appeal from steel enterprises to lower costs. In this context, graphite electrode sector even see incidences like ultra high power (UHP) graphite electrode being replaced by high power (HP) products sometime. From the perspective of graphite electrode production, the "crowding-out effect" of low-cost and inferior quality products has become rather salient in recent years. Statistics compiled by ICC News show the total supply of needle coke in China in 2013 amounts to 161,000 tons, down 17% from 2012, among which imported needle coke accounts for 40%. The total supply of graphite electrode is 600,000 tons, down 6% year on year.
Meanwhile, with the projection of supply surge as well as falling prices of China's scrap steel, the proportion of electric furnace steel in China is expected to go up substantially, likely to reach the world average level of electric steel development. In addition, LF refining furnaces at iron and steel enterprises have undergone dramatic growth in recent years, which thus puts into mainstream demand for large-size electrodes and encourages the value of graphite electrode to return as electrodes with competitive price and of high quality become popular with downstream clients. Needle coke market will also come back on track. For needle coke producers, their core interest will continue to be making products of higher quality with competitive price whilst at a lower cost. ICC News forecasts that by 2020, China's crude steel concentration will reach approximately 820 million tons, among which the ratio of electric steel will rise to 20%, China's demand for graphite electrode will reach 550,000 tons, which will create a demand for needle coke of no less than 360,000 tons annually.
The 2014 International Needle Coke And Graphite Electrode Summit Forum is dedicated to providing a comprehensive communication platform for all enterprises from needle coke, graphite electrode and related trade fields. We invite representatives of well-known needle coke and graphite electrode manufacturers from home and abroad, as well as new entrants and interested parties to join the meeting for extensive business exchanges. At the same time, we also invite experts from steel field to give in-depth analyses on current utilization of molten iron at electrical steel-making mills, as well as development trends and policy plan concerning the steel market .
